6 Months at Google 9

Maybe my little April fools joke was a bit too obvious. Me leaving Google for Microsoft? That would never happen. I don’t think anyone ever left Google for Microsoft and there is a reason why. Google is just awesome. At Google I got to work with the smartest people and they have all of the best DHTML people.

Over my first 6 months I’ve been on 2 different teams and did one launch. I helped create the local shopping for Froogle which was widely covered in the media at thanksgiving. Since then I’ve been working with my current team as well as doing some 20% projects. One of these was helping Glen with IECanvas, which turned into ExplorerCanvas. I also helped out a bit with Google Page Creator and other yet to be released products. The option to dedicate 20% of your time to whatever you feel like is brilliant.

Contrary to what I wrote in my last post the web is not dead. The web is live and kicking and I believe we will see a lot of things in the coming year that will make you rethink how web applications are designed. That is one thing that I really like about working at Google. It allows me as simple developer to maybe influence how things evolve.

I believe the web is bound for better things than Ajax and (ehm April fools joke) Comet. Let’s screw these lesser cleaning chemicals and bring out the caustic soda.

Just today I heard that someone did leave Google for Microsoft… Sad day.

I have the feeling Google is really fun to work for and is heavenly for developers, but on the other hand I get the idea there is not a real organizational structure and everybody just plays around with whatever they would like to do. :) Maybe I am just totally wrong, and ignorant about what you are working on, and the business plan involved.

Erik, when am I going to get my calender in GMail?
I expected to get it the 1st of April…

  • http://erik.eae.net Erik Arvidsson

    Martijn, I cannot answer this.

  • Martijn

    No problem.
    I was only (half) joking.
I more or less expected Google to release something at the 1st of April.
I know they released GMail the 1st of April.

Dude…working on Google Pages is so wrong for so many reasons! Just kidding. Next thing you know, you will be building the WebOS for Google! ;)

Dude, seriously, though, it would be great if you posted something about what we all accomplished at WebOS and how we pioneered the WebOS vision back in 1999-2001.

    Cheers,

    Shervin

You don’t post so often now you work for Google. :-(

  • http://erik.eae.net Erik Arvidsson

True. I don’t know if my postings has gone down or whether they have reached the usual rate ;-)

Its because he’s having too much fun chasing folks around with Nerf guns and tripping over the billions of dollars in the warehouse ;)

    Seriously, more posts man :)

If you came to Microsoft, I could arrange a BattleField 2142 style nerf gun? how could you turn that down! ;)

    More. Posts.
